Welcome to my mini-series entitled Dustin Vs. which follows the adventures of me, Dustin, as I go out to the cold city of Milwaukee to meet Diane’s parents, but I like to think of them as the in laws. Today I will be covering Diane’s mothers name and our wonderfully boring events around the house.
So yesterday I promised to explain how I don’t know Diane’s mothers name and I’ll start there before I go into the boredom. As it currently stands, Diane’s mother has 2 names: one for formal/distant relationships and one for those who know her. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve never met these people so I was unsure which name to use. I mean, I did father her grand child after all. Anyway, so which one am I? According to Diane, her mother would introduce herself and that would settle the whole situation. Well, I’ve been here for a few days and no one has yet to say her name! Her husband refers to her as “wife” and her daughter affectionately calls her “mommy”. Diane goes with “mom” most of the time.
So I tried to tackle this tricky subject with the subject of grand motherhood. With my daughter in my lap, I asked her, “So, what name would you like? Grandma and Grandmother are both open as my mom is trying to get Grandma Gayla or GiGi for short.” Her response, she didn’t really like any of them. Ok, I can give her that as it took my mother a while to be ok with the situation. But it didn’t really help me all that much. When I have an answer, I’ll have to create a post just for the wonderful occasion.
Boredom
So Diane’s parents are the type of people who would never leave the house if they could help it. Well, that’s a big problem for someone who is used to moving along in the regular paced lane of life. I can honestly say that I’ve never wished for a vacation to end so quickly as I have here. We can’t use the car, if we go outside they lock the door behind us and make us knock to get back in. I think they maybe trying to subtly discourage us to not go out into the big scary world. But I feel like I’m going out on a crazy limb here so I’ll take a moment to describe the events of today.
- Woke up around 10am (8 Oregon time) and had breakfast
- After it was served, everyone scattered to their respective holes
- A few hours later, Diane’s mother and sister Jackie came to the table to play cards
- Diane joined in and I took our sleeping daughter to hang out with Grandpa Willie (who is really cool)
- Amelia woke up after 20 minutes so we took her for a walk to try and get her to sleep
- Didn’t work
- Around 3pm we watched Dark Knight with Grandpa
- Ate dinner and watched House of Pain with Jackie
- Watch the new Star Trek with Grandpa
- Came up to our room to play cards and put Amelia to bed since it was getting late
That was it. To sum it up, we went for a walk, watched The Dark Knight and Star Trek and played some cards. Now, some people would say that’s a really full day of nothing which is perfect for a vacation except we did the same thing yesterday minus the movies and cards. So are you picking up what I’m putting down? We’re stuck in this house, dependent on Diane’s friends to get us out of here and there is nothing to do with in walking distance. I guess the good thing is that this is turing out to be one really really really long vacation.
